  • Why Hide A Product On Shopify?

Most people will just delete the product from their store entirely and, while this may seem like a good idea, removing a product completely will lead to a broken product URL if it was featured on other websites or blogs. This often creates customer frustration or disappointment.

Hiding products is a far more effective way of managing your eCommerce inventory and so we have put together a step-by-step guide on how to hide products on Shopify without impacting user experience or search engine optimization.

There are three ways to hide a product without negatively impacting your online store. Read below to find out just how quick and easy this useful process can be.

How to Change Your Product Visibility From The Product Home Page

Once you are logged in to Shopify, go to your products' home page. Here you will see a list of all your in-store products. Select the product(s) you wish to hide.

Once the product is selected, click on the "more actions" button to access the drop-down menu.

In the drop-down menu, select "remove available channel(s)". You will now see a pop-up that allows you to select the channels you would like this product removed from.

Once you have selected the channel/channels where you would like your product to be hidden, click on "make products unavailable".  In your product list, you will now see that the item has "0 sales channels" below its active status.

This means that your specified product(s) will no longer appear on the channels you selected and will no longer be accessible to your customers.

If you accidentally hide a product or want to change the product visibility on the front-end, simply reverse the process.

To make the product visible to the customer again, select the product you wish to unhide, click on "more actions" and select "make product(s) available". Check the boxes of the channels where you want your product to reappear and it will now show up in your online store again.

How to Change Your Product Visibility From The Edit Product Page

You can just as easily hide a product on Shopify from the product edit page, however, if you have more than a handful of products, having to go into each one to hide it will be tedious. If you are adding a product but don't want it to show up on your store just yet, you can keep it in draft mode.

To hide a product in the edit screen, go to the "sales channels and apps" panel and click "manage".

You will see a pop-up that allows you to deselect the sales channels where you no longer want your product to be shown.

Once you have deselected the channels, click "done". The sales channels and apps will now show either only the channels you have kept selected or "0 selected" if you deselected all channels.

Save your product to ensure it is removed from the chosen sales channels.

To unhide the product you can simply click on "manage", select the channels where you want your product to be available, and click "done". The selected channels will be shown in the sales channels and apps panel.

How Do I Archive Products on Shopify?

Archiving items is another great way to hide products. Archiving products removes them from your store, removes all product tags from the item, but keeps the URLs active so that any external links remain functional/unbroken.

Customers can still access the product from search engines but it will no longer be available for purchase.

You can archive a product if you are no longer selling it or it is out of production.

It will also preserve your sales history and allow you to look up old items as needed without clogging up your storefront.

To archive a product, select the item/items on your product home page and click on "more actions" → "archive products".

In the pop-up, click "archive products". The product will now be archived and shown as such on your product home screen.

    Conclusion

Changing your product status to archived, or removing sales channels, is a great way to hide products that are out of stock, no longer available, or that you only want to sell on specific sales channels.

A hidden product means that you don't have to delete the item and its variants, it won't affect your SEO, and you won't end up with frustrated or unhappy customers trying to use broken links or access unavailable items.

There are different ways to hide products on Shopify:

Hiding products from your home page will allow you to hide dozens of products simultaneously and hiding a product from the edit screen will allow for hiding one product at a time. You can also archive products that are no longer on offer or are out of production.

Well-controlled product visibility leads to an improved customer experience and greater success for your online store.

Hiding products far outweights deleting them, or using other short-cuts which may impact the overall functioning of your store and it's products.

We hope you found this helpful and can now easily navigate hiding products from your Shopify store!
